Move to Florida! In my opinion, the season is just beginning here!

I lived there. Sailing is the most boring on Earth, IMHO.

Oh, maybe I'll haul her out, check out the underwater parts, paint the bottom, and put her back in, ready for those warm sunny days we often have down here in the Carolinas. But don't consider moving here, it is already too crowded and prices too high. Some years we have hurricanes, just to keep us humble.

Have a great Winter,

Well, I usually mope around for a couple weekends, totally blowing all the time I would have had to do some garage cleaning or finish the basement bathroom off..been waiting since last winter afterall. But after I come to grips with reality, it will be time to digitize all the footage I took this year, and see how many of the shots can be used in my movie I am working on (called "The Seven Sisters of the Apostles", and is about the seven lighthouses in the Apostle Islands of Lk. Superior, where we sail).
Then there will be time to plan next years trips, as I have a 6 week paid sabbatical which will be used to either start another restaurant if we can find the land, or go sailing and forget the world for 6 wks. (my personal favorite!).
That takes me through the first week..now for the rest of the 4 1/2 mn. time without our boat...hee..

Cheers and Great Memories of this Summer,

Contrary to Earl's opinion, in Florida there is no end to the sailing season. If boring is near perfect sailing weather for the next 6 months, we are very, very bored down here.

Go cruising. Life is a boat. I did from 1991 till 99. Have given it up, but only temporary. One more arm operation and I will be ready to sail again. (might have to be a trawler, next best thing) Plan to depart fall, 2002, I'll only be 73 and ready to rock and roll. Tried trailering this summer, 31 states, 4 Canadian Provinces. Anybody in the market for a beautiful 1998 Airstream Excella 34 and a 97 Ford f-350 diesel, dual wheel truck? I have a beauty for sale. The rice is right.

Get yourself an ice boat and do what they say (sailing on the hard)

Liquidity comes out of the water after this weekend. By the time I get all the stuff off, she's winterized, etc., it's about Thanksgiving. She's away for the winter, until the first nice weekend day in March, when the cover comes off.

That leaves only Dec, Jan and Feb...

There are charts to update, from the accumulating pile of Notices to Mariners. Everything gets inspected... whippings get replaced... sail cover gets sewn, dodger gets repaired, etc. If the dodger needs major surgery, it goes to the canvas shop. (Maybe I'll get the interior cushions recovered, too.) Have to go to West Marine as soon as the 2001 Eldridge is available. Start planning next year's cruises, laying out courses, getting them into the GPS, etc. Wash all the dock lines. Scrub the fenders and the dinghy. Read sailing magazines at least three times each. Go to the boat show, knowing that I love the boat I have. Drive to the marina and make sure the cover's ok, etc., have lunch down there, walk out on the empty dock and remember that I never emptied the dock box (ooops!).

Extend the season!
The fall sailing weather has been so good here in the northeast, I have elected to delay layup until Dec. 1. The cost of the insurance policy endorsement was almost free.

The season is never "over" here as we sail year 'round. I cannot imagine putting Rhiannon "on the hard" each winter. Similarly, I avoid places that have signs saying "Snow Emergency Route" (and "Watch For Falling Rocks" for that matter). It just seems like common sense.

To answer the question, I'm taking Rhiannon to the Bahamas the first week in December. I will try not to envision all those Cape Dories sitting in a boatyard with snow piled on them. Aaaaargh!

For the hams here, I'm installing an Icom 706 Mk II and a PTC IIe for email on the boat. Neat setup with the laptop. As the Bahamas does not permit third-party traffic, the email setup will remain silent in the islands. Meanwhile, I'll check into the Waterway Net at 7268 kHz (LSB) daily at 0745 with a position report.

For the Dorian snowbirds -- drop by if you're on the ICW headed south. 35*05.1'N -- 076*38.7'W. The end slip is open for ICW visitors (w/good water and 30 amps) and there's good holding closeby if someone beats you to it.
