I am trying to upgrade the automatic fire extinguishing system on Parfait, our CD-36, which has a Perkins 4-108 diesel. Fireboy and MarineFire are both telling me that I must have an automatic engine shut down device in addition to the automatic extinguisher, otherwise the engine will simply remove the extinguishant from the engine compartment, and the fire will continue to burn.
So far, I have not been able to get them to tell me how it connects to the engine. It appears to be nothing more than a few power control circuits (relays? solid state?) and I can think of no way that this is going to help shut down a diesel engine with no ignition system. Is there a solenoid-controlled valve in the fuel line? They don't supply one with the system, so maybe there is one there already?
Thanks,
Ken Coit
