CD36 - replacing SS tanks in Bilge

Post by Patrick Turner »

Has anyone had to replace or repair the SS tanks in the bilge of older CD36's? If so, what did it involve/cost? I'm considering the purchase of an older CD and there are 2 water tanks located in the bilge that I'm anticipating may need some attention if not now then sometime in the future. Got any experience or ideas?

Ours are plastic. Question and comments.

All four of our water tanks (hull #40) are plastic. If I were replacing tanks, I think I would go with polyethylene. You can get good tanks in a wide variety of sizes. Metal corrodes. Even stainless.

How are you planning on reaching the tanks? In our boat, the sole was built on top of the tank. There is an access port for cleaning the tanks, but it is way too small for removing them or putting in new ones. I've always thought that if this needed doing, I would enlarge the main bilge port (in front of the companionway), making it large enough to squeeze through. It needs only to be made a little longer. A skinny person might squeeze through it now, but not me. Along with this, I think I would replace the current cover with a grate. That way, when you come in out of the rain, you can stand on the grate and drip into the bilge.
