Sea Strainer

Post by Russell S. Rau »

Still doing light restoration work on my '83 CD 30. Appreciate all the help. Spent mucho time this weekend pulling and replacing hoses. Engine is a Volvo 3000 Series, I believe 15 HP. Fresh water cooled. It appears the sea water enters via through hull fitting and boes through the v-drive unit and then on to the engine heat exchanger. I am curious that there does not appear to be any sort of stainer on the sea water line. It goes directly from through hull to the v-drive. Is this normal? Was this the factory setup? Has anyone retrofitted a sea water strainer. Boat is in saltwater on Galveston Bay. Thanks for your help!

Russel,

On my CD30 there is a bronze strainer between the seacock and the v-drive. I believe it is a Perko unit. They are shown in the West Marine Catalog. # 114746 or 114787, I don't remember the size.
