considering roller furling

Post by Carl Folta »

Just finished my first season sailing Second Wind, a 1974 CD28 hull # 13. It's a great boat with the original rigging scheme, including the self tending club boom. The self tending head sail is very convenient and trouble free, but it is rather small and hanking on the 130 genoa in light air (the usual conditions mid summer on the Hudson River where we sail) is time consuming and leaves us with the boom and sail on the foredeck and no room for my kids to lounge.

I'd like to remove the club foot and add a roller furled 150. Any advice on removal and/or the best sail or and furler to purchase for the CD? Is is possible to buy this equipment used? Can I retain the self-tending set up (w/o the boom) for a furled-in sail, or must it be removed also? I would also like to run the halyard lines back to the cockpit -- anyone have some advice (hardware needed and how to do?)

All advice and welcome and appreciated.

Carl,

I've had roller furling on my CD30 since I bought her 16 years ago. I recently replaced my beloved and trusty (till now) Hood furler with a new Harken furler. This Harken is even more beloved than my Hood, it's an easier furler to furl, has the ability to reef the headsail and feeds a new sail in smoothly and easily. Feeding the sail in the Hood was always difficult.

I have seen roller reefing sails on a self tending boom. The outhaul for the sail is led to a block on the boom to bring the clew of the sail down on the boom where it would ordinarily be fastened. The outhaul is then led forward parallel to the boom to a cheek block feeding to a block on deck near the boom pivot and is then led back to the cockpit or someplace where where it can be tied off.

I have not done this with PERI's self tending jib, but have long been tempted to do it.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll get some good advice from others.

PERI was shipped out here from the Poughkeepsie Yacht Club, by the way, another Hudson River boat. This weekend we had friends as houseguests who used to own a CD27, also at the PYC, and we reminisced about many happy weekends in places such as Rondout Creek. And, remembered, as we glided over San Francisco BAy, that by now our boats were well put away for winter!

I have a Flexible Furler by Cruising Design on my CD28. It's designed
for non-racing boats and is beyond simplicity. The furler is on the
forestay, which prevents hanking on the jib. To use the club boom, I
either use the partially furled genoa. Alternatively, I rigged a wire inner
forestay just behind the furled genoa, which I tension with the jib halyard.
(The furler has an internal halyard which frees up the jib halyard.)
I then hank the jib to the jury rigged inner forestay.
