post furneral services were held for my old engine Honda 15hsp 4 stroke, It's time to move on and get a new/used engine. I have a 26 CD am looking at either a Yamaha 15 hp or 9.9 high trust or Honda 15hp or 9.9. Does anyone have any recomendations, problems, thoughts on these ?
Also have removed the wind vane and am looking at ladders and placement, I would really like a platform but don't see them on sailboats, why? drag? would position matter any? thoughts idea's???
Thanks for the interest.

Re: Yamaha vs Honda and swim platforms vs ladder
Just installed a new Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust in my CD26. With its high thrust gearing/prop combo, and the shifter out on the end of the tiller, it's a great engine for the boat. Yamaha re-routed some exhaust gas lines which seems to have cleared up some of the choking problems when running down in the engine well. My only complaint is the automatic choke. It probably works OK for the engine test lab at the factory, but personally I'd rather have manual control of this. By the way, some kind of fresh water flushing system is called for if you are going to leave it on the boat "soaking" in salt water during your sailing season. I left this off of my first engine and the salt ate a hole through the side of it in less than 5 years! Ouch!
Re: Yamaha vs Honda and swim platforms vs ladder
John, What lenght shaft did you put on your 26, and how are you going to get a flush attachment on the motor without pulling out part way. I have been trying to figure out how to get a flush attachment on my 9.9 but with my long shaft I can't seem to get down into the well with the attachment. I'm now trying to see if I can put a engine tilt type bracket on my mount to pull that heavy engine out far enough to get a flush attachment on.

My engine is a long shaft (not the extra long). I purchased an engine flush hose from a Yamaha dealer parts department. It's a short piece of rubber hose made up with the correct fitting for the engine flush port on one side, and a standard garden hose fitting on the other. Then I made up a short section of regular garden hose, and attached one end to the engine flush hose under water, and tied the other end off up near the engine mount. The whole run of hose stays attached to the engine in the water all the time (yes, must accept a small drag penalty). With this in place, I can run fresh water directly into the engine flush port while the engine is down in the locker. I'm sure the exposed under water hose wont last forever, but replacing it will always be inexpensive and easy (much better than ruining the expensive engine with salt corrosion).

what was the cause of death?
You mention that your previous 15hp Honda bit the dust? What failed/wore out to the point it was not repairable? I own a 1992 9.9 Honda and while the praise bestowed on these 4 stroke engines goes on and on...I question if the Honda's have the longevity of the OMC kickers

Thanks, I will look at this option when I go out to look at motors again this fall, My evinrude is getting old and the carb does not want to idle as well as it used to and the point of diminshing returns is soon approaching. I like the idea of the shifter on the tiller, Too-Cool!
