Charity donations of boats ( 1975 CD25 )

If anybody has information on charities that accept boats as donations, please forward them to me. I have been unsuccessful in selling my 1975 Cape Dory CD25 located in Warwick, R. I. this summer and I have no desire to pay another $1200 in storage fees at the marina until I sell the boat. I was asking $4500 at the beginning of the summer ( there is no motor ) and will accept $3500. Anything less than that would be a steal. So if there's any last minute shoppers, please call me to see the boat. Otherwise any information on charities that anybody might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated. Ken; look in the back of most sail magazine's they have at least one or two ads of charity's accepting boats.

Ken - I faced a similar problem when I tried to sell my 1972 32’ Ericson with a blown atomic-4 motor. I contacted the New York Maritime Academy (located under the Throgs Neck Bridge in NY) who I had heard was looking for donations. They have a great program where they guarantee the boat will not be resold during a specific period, it may have been 3 years. My accountant had indicated that the IRS could revalue the donation within a certain number of years of the original donation if it is resold for a substantially lower amount.

I had the boat surveyed to establish the fair market value which the surveyor was VERY generous in determining when I told him the boat was being donated to NY Maritime. I rather not list the specifics for all the IRS auditors who sail Cape Dories but suffice to say, the deal was much better than holding the boat for another season and trying to sell it in the spring.

I would suggest you give both NY Maritime and Mass Maritime (Southern end of Cape Cod Canal) a call to see if they are interested.

There are two sailing clubs for kids in Boston. One is The Courageous Sailing Center at (617) 242-3821. This is the club I sailed with. We actually had the 12 meter COURAGEOUS (America's Cup winner 1974 & 1977) as one of our club boats, in addition to Lasers, Rhodes, and J-22.

Another is Community Boating at (617) 523-1038. This is the club on the Charles river. Community boating has a bunch of Cape Cod Mercuries and a few Typhoons. I sailed there once or twice.

Both are great clubs that teach kids to sail and need lots of help.

Chuck Fontaine, [508 830-5006], manages the sailing program and boat auctions at Mass Maritime. I'm sure he'd be able to give you information on donations.

The Ipswich Bay Yacht Club Educational Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide sailing training to young people. We regularly accept donations of boats which we refurbish using volunteer labor and then sell. The resulting funds are used to support our program.

Since we expect to turn the boats around in a relatively short time, we don't accept basket cases or derelicts. We do offer a charity deduction and a minimum of aggravation in disposing of the boat.

This particular boat is probably too far away for us, but we would be interested in boats closer to the North Shore of Boston.
