Rebuilding the Head

Post by Richard Formica »

Hi,
In the off season I want to rebuild the head on my 36.

I have two questions.
1. Regarding the floor. There is some rot in the 'subflooring' on the aft side of the shower drain. To repair this I thought that after removing the tiles (installed by previous owner), I would cut out the rot , by feeling around underneath this seems to be fairly limited to the area of the drain. Then I would cut a piece of marine plywood to the shape of the entire floor and then place it over what remains of the existing floor. I decided on this approach because it seems the subflooring is one piece for the whole cabin or at least I can't seem to find a seam. Is this a reasonable approach? Any other suggestions?

2. Do any of you have any experience with the SeaLand head that has the 9 gallon holding tank directly underneath the toilet? My idea was to attach a Y-valve to the pump out connector and then run one line over to discharge seacock and one to a pumpout fitting on the deck. This idea eliminates the problems with a hose (currently it is at least 12 feet long and takes 2 90 degree turns) leading to the holding tank under the V-breath and the holding tank itself. I plan to use the locking Jabsco Y-valve so that while in Long Island Sound I should be in compliance with the DEP. Again any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Thanks
rich

In our part of the world, you can employ the services of every type of marine tradesman, EXCEPT a plumber. If you are without a mother-in-law, it will keep you humble. Yachting in the grand tradition.
Good luck on your project.
