CD36 Staysail - is going to a roller furling a good idea?

Post by Tim »

I have a CD36 ketch rigged, also a cutter model, with a yankee genoa, and have removed the staysail boom and sail to increase deck space forward. I haven't used the staysail since I removed it now that's it been reduced to a hank-on sail. I just received a free roller-reefing (similar to roller-furling but a little different) unit that I could outfit to the staysail with a little re-cut (if necessary) and the addition of a sacrificial cloth. If I use it I lose the ability to hank on a storm trysail, but I gain a roller option, which sounds nifty. Anyone using a roller furling/roller reefing on the staysail and have thoughts on the use of it?

Tim,
I have a 36 Cutter. Over the winter I had a new mast built and had the rigger make the inner forestay with a quick release. It cost about $450 dollars. This is nice because when using a Genoa tacking is very easy and you give up none of the benefits of the cutter rig. Attaching a roller furler would limit this option. If you do any light air sailing I think a break away inner forestay is the way to go.
Just my thoughts
