Setting a Ty on a Triad Trailer

Post by Robert M Paterson »

With restoration of my Ty, and refurbished work on a Triad trailer I am now faced with the problem of putting the boat on the trailer. The boat is resting in a wooden cradle, that is bolted together, and can be disasembled to leave the keel resting on the 4 X 4's. Poppets then can be used to shore up the boat. I also have some larger poppets that at one time were used for a 30 ft vessel, but to large to get under the boat when she is sitting on the ground. The only heavy equipment to speak of, on site, is a couple of 2 ton car jacks. No heavy equipment can be brought in to lift the boat.Any help or suggestions would greatly be apprecated. Thank's in advance. Bob

Bob,

Interesting problem!

If I were you, I would find a way to get a back hoe in there to lift the boat using slings. Apparently 5000 lb is a typical capacity for a back hoe, and they can get just about anywhere.

Regards,
Richard.

are we talking a rubber-tired backhoe like a Case 580E or K, or a Deere 555? if so it ain't gonna happen! i very much doubt a 5000lb. capacity even with a 24" bucket and you could never hold the front end down to lift a ty - believe me i've operated them all.
now if you're talking about an excavator with tracks (like a bulldozer) then you're in the ballpark but it's gonna be a big one!
it would seem your best bet would be a truck mounted crane with a long reach like they use for mounting air conditioning units, etc. on buildings up to two stories high.

Boat movers have a fancy trailer with a low frame, a back cross-member that can be removed, and frame-mounted poppets. They also carry removable poppets. By substituting poppets for your frame, then backing the professional trailer in under the boat, while juggling poppets, the boat can be loaded on the trailer and launched. And then in the fall, haul it on your own trailer.

I moved my Ty this spring from a cradle to a trailer with a rubber tired back hoe,Cat 426, and it picked it up with out any problem at all. I used the ring that is in the keel. I know, it is not for that purpose, it was used to drop the lead into the boat whem manufactured, but it worked and I think that it is plenty strong for the purpose. If you are leary about that make a sling out of nylon straps. I have done this also. You have to make sure that you have boards or somthing to spread the straps away from the toe rails or they may break. If the straps are long enough to not put a strain on the toe rails then it is too tall for the backhoe to reach.

How about digging holes to anchor the larger poppets you have available and then use to raise the boat the required distance? I recently bought a new Triad trailer and need to know the approximate poppet pad settings to fit my Typhoon and wondered if you could measure yours and let me know. Thanks in advance.

I was in the opposite situation 2 years ago after my Typhoon arrived on a rotting cradle sitting on a flat steel trailer.
First, jack up the entire cradle onto blocks so the keel is above the
the support pad of your trailer.
Second, use jack stands or home-made poppets (burying the end is a
good idea, just space them so the trailer can fit between.)
Third, place blocks under the keel between the cross-members of
the old cradle.
Fourth, Dissassemble and remove the old cradle.
Fifth, back the new trailer (with poppets removed) under the boat.
you will have to remove and replace the blocks under the keel as
the trailer crossmembers/axle advance
Sixth, assemble the trailer and jack it up to take the load
Seventh, remove the blocks and jack stands
Finally, lower the trailer and drive away.

This can be very dangerous if the boat is not well supported and the hull has a tendency to list unless you jack each corner of the cradle gradually and keep checking the vertical alignment of the keel. Three of us did the exact opposite operation with 3 scissor automobile jacks in 4 hours. Have fun!

I am in the process of buiding a trailer for my Typhoon. Do you have any pictures of the boat and trailer that you could e-mail me. It would be much appreciated.
