Anyone experienced with a MaxProp on a CD27???????

Post by Yves Feder W1UX »

Any CD27 owner knows about the relatively underpowered early models - our Yanmar YSE-1, 8 HP, with its standard 2 bladed prop works fine as an auxiliary except under "strong" conditions :)

I've followed most of the discussions about repowering and may eventually go to a 2 cyl Yanmar, BUT in the meantime does anyone with a CD27 have any experience mating an 8 hp one lung Yanmar to a MaxProp?????

I'm trying to find out if that's a worthwhile consideration since our YSE has under 800 hours and works perfectly.

And yes of course we do plenty of motorsailing to help the li'l iron fella out :)

Thanks for any experience anyone can pass on.

Best wishes,

Yves

Wow- hull No. 4, eh? I have hull No. 47, also a 1977.

I did some major research last season on this issue. What I have learned is: 1) a 3-blade Max-Prop will cost about $1800, 2) it should help "quite a bit", and 3) reverse power will be phenomenal.

Personally, I don't think it's very cost effective, but if money were no object, I might consider it. No, on second thought, if money WERE REALLY no object, I'd buy a brand, spanking-new Yanmar 2GM20. The engine is maybe $3,000 (if I recall); I couldn't bring myself to spend nearly $2k on a prop.

Maybe a Michigan 3-bladed wheel is a better idea. I think it's around $200-300. The downside is of course, the drag while sailing. I saw someone mention they put a 3-blade on their CD, and it made a big difference.
