I have just installed a new radar on my CD. The basics are straight forward, but the uses, whys, and wherefores of electronic bearing lines and variable range markers and more are poorly spelled out in the manual or in Chapman or anything else I have. Does anyone know of a practical book not too highly technical regarding the theory of radar but eminently readable on the actual uses of radar that I might find available?

Re: radar...Try USPS or CGAUX
Bill;
IMHO most subjects in the boating world require some hands on. The Coast Guard highly emphsizes radar training. Radar interpretation is fairly complex and in the hands of a misinformed or untrained operator
radar is more of a hazzard than a safety device. Not to dissuade you from learning via text I would recomend you check with your local Coast Guard Aux or Power Squadron to get some 'hands on' training.

Re: radar
I haven't read this book so I cannot endorse it, but it seems like it might be easy reading:
A Small Boat Guide to RADAR, by Tim Bartlett 97 pages, paperback, many illustrations. Published by Fernhurst Books. $21.95
You can also purchase a radar simulator like "<a href="http://www.starpath.com/">Starpath Radar Trainer</a>" for Windows or Macintosh, or <a href="http://www.lightmaster.co.uk/">LightMaster Radar Simulator</a>.
If you've got any unused vacation days, you can also attend training at schools like:
Starpath School of Navigation
3050 NW 63rd Street
Seattle, WA 98107
206)-783-1414 or 800-955-8328
Here's some info on the Introduction to Radar class:

or
Boatwise
72 Woodman Rd.
South Hampton, NH 03827
Tel: 800-698-7373

Here's some info on their Onboard Radar Training Class:
