The cetol-over-varnish question prompts me to ask whether anyone who had Cetol finish on their boat switched to Armada, and what prep work they did before making the switch. Does the Cetol show through the new, browner finish? Any other tips? Thanks.

Armada over Cetol

Re: Armada over Cetol
I have used West Marine WoodPro, which is made by Armada, Over Cetol with good results. I think there is still a slight orange tint however. I'm color-blind and can't tell the difference, but it sure looks good.

Re: Armada over Cetol
Darin,
I used Cetol on my CD27 for 7 years and was very pleased with it. I used the original "non-marine" type Cetol available in hardware store for patio furniture, etc. in the early '90's and it was great! I sold the boat to a friend and he used varnish and BOAT/US' private brand of Cetol last year on her. It looks almost as good as varnish and holds up better although varnish is "clearer".
I bought a CD28 to replace the CD27 and it had Cetol Marine on it. I did some research and decided to use Armada instead. I took everything down to the wood mostly by sanding. Didn't want to lift the grain by using harsh chemicals. Put the Armada on (3 coats) and it is really great! It is a little more orange than Cetol, but looks clearer than Cetol in my opinion. My friend and I often raft the two boats up side by side and I personally think the Armada is holding up in the Tampa Bay/Gulf of Mexico sun, humidity and heat a little better than the BOAT/US stuff. I am pleased with the Armada and would recommend it to anyone. Cetol was great for me and it is really a toss-up!

Re: Armada over Cetol
Armada is more orange than Cetol? I thought that Armada had all the benefits of Cetol, but was more brown. Am I thinking of a different product, maybe? Thanks for your reply.

Re: Armada over Cetol
When I bought our Mahalo the previous owner had used Cetol and I didn't like the look of the teak. I had Robinhood take it down to the bare teak and refinish with Armada. I am very happy with the finish and find it easy to maintain. Once a season we apply another coat and it lookds great.

Re: Armada over Cetol
We had exactly the same experience as Mahalo with our cd40. Robinhood removed the old cetol completely, which is mandatory, then applied 4 coats of Armada. Looks great!!Gene Courteau wrote: When I bought our Mahalo the previous owner had used Cetol and I didn't like the look of the teak.
