1977 CD Cutter - Worth It?

I am in the beginning stages of purchasing a Cape Dory (my first “real” boat). I’ve talked to several of you owners about facets of this, but I wanted to pose a general question to the contributors of this board to get a response.

The boat I’m buying is a 1997 CD30 cutter. She appears to be in very good shape, and has an 18hp Yanmar diesel on her with 500 hours. The current owner has kept the wood in pretty good shape, and the gelcoat has only a couple of spider cracks. I’ve not looked at the chain plates or mast step closely yet – but I will. The electronics she has are ok to good – but not stellar. I have sea trials on this boat on July 5th. I have pictures if anyone wants to see them.

I’ve worked to a price of $32000 for this boat – and while there is a slight bump in prices for the CDs on the West Coast – I’m wondering if the number is too high. Again, I’ll know more once an (independent) surveyor takes a look at her, but I want to develop some sense of where the line is – especially with respect to things like corrosion, etc.

Who has some handy advice on how to determine if the value of this CD30 more or less equates that being paid for her?

you've covered the most important item - independent surveyor. he should also be able to advise you on price.
