A 1976 CD 30 ketch I am brokering has a rusted mizzen pad-eye backing
plate which must be replaced. It was glassed in and the mat has been removed which covered the rectangular plate. However, what appeared to be a simple and straightforward job may not be so. (After all, it is a boat) Going down the side of the hull, adjacent to the plate which is on the underside of the deck, are three long parallel "lumps" in the glass. I suspect these to be steel rods welded to the backing plate, to tie deck and hull together at this stress point. If anyone has done some surgery in this area I would appreciate any information you might provide, as I wish to help the new owner get this project squared away. In this case, the plate does not just have some surface scale on it - it is really toasted, as they say. Best regards from Maine, Tony Betz ('81 CD 33Wildings)
