Raco filter for Yanmar 1GM

Post by jim jamieson »

I am planning to replace the old Fram filter with a Raco unit with priming pump on my 1GM. Which model have people used? The 215 series seems to be about right but I wonder if 15 gph and a 2 micron filter works ok or if the next size up is better. Any advice or experience will be helpful.
thanks

Jim- I just did this last year, and I used the smallest Racor with the see-thru bowl (120 I think). The 15 gph is plenty for this little engine (being about 20x more capacity than wide open throttle will use up). I noticed a slight increase in WOT speed, probably because the ol' Fram needed cleaning.

However, I strongly recommend spending the extra $30 and get the next level up because it has a push button primer pump. What a mistake I made not getting this. Think about all the mess you can avoid when getting diesel into the new filter!

The "see through" bowl used to be considered a minus by either the Coast Guard or Underwriters Labs because it--unlike the metal bowl--could shatter. Probably never would happen.... We opted for the metal bowl on our 27'.

The metal bowl version is required only on commercial service vessels and all gasoline powered boats. THe plastic bowled Racor are totally legal as is if you are a private boat, and running diesel fuel. I prefer to be able to quickly look and see what the fuel system is doing, rather than have to remove the metal shield first.
