HAVE A 75 25 FOOT CD WITH A 9.9 YAMAHA FOUR STROKE. NEVER RESPONDS TO THE RUDDER WHEN BACKING UP. ALWAY BACKS TO PORT.
AT MY DOCK I PUSH IT OFF AND IT WORKS WELL (UN-NERVES FIRST TIME SAILOR) AT MARINAS WHEN TRAVELING HAVE HAD SOME INTERESTING TIMES AND HAVE GOTTEN THE MARINA MANAGER A LITTLE EXCITED.
ANYONE FIND A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM??

Re: REVERSE
I've got a CD26, same engine, same problem (kind of). My problem is I want to back to port but always backed to starboard. I posted the problem and got a response from Dana (another CD26 owner with a Yamaha 9.9). I can't exactly remember the entire explanation, but I've been playing with various rudder settings. It would appear that to back to port from a dead stop, I want to have the tiller all the way to port. I know, it sounds wierd. I tried it today, and it worked. Once I have made some headway (or sternway as it were), I then move the tiller to a more logical position and off I go. It's got something to do with the reverse thrust on the Yamaha prop and the force against the rudder. Try playing around with various combinations of rudder and see how your boat responds.KENNETH MERSON wrote: HAVE A 75 25 FOOT CD WITH A 9.9 YAMAHA FOUR STROKE. Re: REVERSE
I have a CD26 with an outboard and I've experienced the same. One thing to remember - your outboard is designed to pivot. It wont pivot much because it's down in the engine well, but I've found the engine will pivot enough to provide a good deal of "turning thrust". Try this to help push the stern around while the boat backs up. (Of course, it works even better while motoring ahead for making very sharp turns under power.)
Re: REVERSE
Ken,
I'm using a 15" 8hp motor. This is small enough to allow about 10-15 degrees of motor pivot. This allow me to direct the reverse thrust under the port side of the hull, counteracting a great deal of the prop walk you describe.

Re: REVERSE
This is my first year owning a 25 Cape Dory. I was told right off the start "they don't back up." I have a 7.5 merk 2 stroke. I found she is under powered. Inorder to turn here you have to wait until she gets moving because the thrust does not push against the rutter. Again, once she starts moving I have had no trouble turning port or starbard. There is alot of weight you are trying to push with limited HP, so I just wait and know where I am going to ge before I get there. Hope there is good wind and you don't even need to use the iron lung.KENNETH MERSON wrote: HAVE A 75 25 FOOT CD WITH A 9.9 YAMAHA FOUR STROKE. NEVER RESPONDS TO THE RUDDER WHEN BACKING UP.
