I'm loking at options for a new engine in my CD30. I definately want more power than my current 14 h.p. Universal.
Any help from those individuals that have replaced their original engines would be appreciated.

REPOWERING A CD30

Re: REPOWERING A CD30
Dayspring is a CD30 cutter, from 1979. In the past few years she has
had a Volvo 2002 20hp diesel installed, with a V drive, so that the
business end of the motor is aft under the cockpit.
This motor has fresh water cooling which is a big plus I think.
All in all it works very well, except that you need to be reasonably
Biafran to get at the back of the engine to do regular checks and maintenance. The top speed under power is a modest 4 to 5 knots.
She still has the original stuffing box stern gland which is fine,
although part of the ships daily routine when away, is to check the
drip rate.

Re: REPOWERING A CD30
Murray,
We have a 1983 CD30, with the Volvo MD7B. At 2050 RPM's, I get 5.5 kt.,and at 2200, I get 6 kts. My top end is 2600, per the spec.
Frequently with repowering, the torque curve changes so far that the owner also has to reprop to match the new curve. With 20 hp, vs. my 13, I would expect your 6 kt. point to fall in the area where you see 4-5 kts. How is the exhaust coloration when under load? Any blackness to it? (I suspect that the prop may be underpitched).
I too wish for more than the 13hp I have. We made the decision to rebuild the engine rather than repower it, and am glad we did. THe cost of a rebuild how4ever, has gone from our ~$2500 to around ~$5k now. New engines are still about $8-10k I hear//although I don't know.
Cheers!
