Hello all,
For those of us with Lewmar 40 winches circa 1980-1983, know that the parts were made in imperial measurements. There are not many of them as they moved to metric pretty quickly. The plastic line strippers at 40+ years old are starting to fail and new parts are not being made. These fit around the main shaft just under the self tailing mechanism and prevent the line from getting jammed under the chrome plated leading arm - ask me how I know this. A 35knot beam reach late last season dealt the final blow to my port side winch. But with the right part this is an easy repair. It was a perfect project for 3D printing.
My high schooler son took the starboard winch's good line stripper to his school shop and made a few as a class project. After a tweak to add a mm to the inside diameter, they work well. Attached is the drawing. Since I cannot seem to attach the .sti file for the print, please PM me if you would like it to make your own parts. Use a good UV resistant 3D print filament. These old bronze Lewmars are good winches, and pawls and springs etc. can still be had from Lewmar, so they're worth keeping around.
Fair winds and good sailing!
