Cracked shaft log on cd28

Post by Dave B »

Looking for advice or experience. Had a marina replace cutlass bearing this march and they cracked the shaft log (fiberlass tube that the shaft comes through) They tried repairing and it still leaks. So now boat is out of the water for second time. They want to somehow remove the whole tube and out in a new one. They say they will call Robinhood yachts for advice. Boat is in SE Connecticut. Anybody had anything like this before?
Thanks

Hanalei had the same problem a few years before I bought her(the crack was inside the boat), almost sunk her too, from the story I heard! Here's what the repair was:

The yard removed the entire shaft log and replaced it with a red brass tube of about the same length(epoxied in place of course), except it started at a true shaft log/cutlass bearing support that bolted onto the outer surface of the aft end of the keel. The red brass tube is threaded into this fitting. At the forward end, a new stuffing box was added that screws onto the red brass shaft log in the usual manner. That stopped the leak for good, made the replacement of cutlass bearing easy(no digging out fiberglass looking for set screws), and makes adjusting the packing nut internally easy as well. It is a real seaman like job they did, and I would recommend it.

Hope this helps...I wonder why CD built their shaft logs the way they did, it is a real weak spot in the overall construction. A fiberglass tube should never be exposed to that much vibration for so long, failure is imminent!

What yard did you have this done at? My work was at Pine Island marina (never doing that again). Do you have a 1" shaft- I was told by a reputable source to use a red brass shaft log but then was told that there was not one that would be appropriate diameter. I would greatly appreciate anymore feedback.
