Bimini for CD36

Post by Frank D. Miller »

We have a CD36 (1982). When we purchased this boat it had an excellent Dodger, but we would like to add a Bimini for it to keep us a little dryer. We sail in the NW where we get 36 inches of rain annually, so a bimini would help a lot. Does the boom need to be raised in order to do this? Has anyone done this or seen it done on the CD36? Any info would be appreciated.

Frank,

Parfait has a dodger and a bimini which work well together. There is enough space between them to see clear ahead while standing at the helm under the bimini. I don't think the mast was raised, but we can measure it if you like.

I am sending a photo in jpeg format separately. If anyone else would like a copy, let me know.

Frank,
I also have a 1982 CD-36. My next project will be a bimini. My sails are still the originals that came with the boat. When close hauled the boom ends up being lower than the top of my head. A bimini will not allow me to stand. My plan is to have the foot of the sail modified by cutting away the foot at the clew end and tapering to have no material removed at the tack. this will raise the boom at the point where it matters and not mess with the hardware at the mast end. The reef points may also need to be similarly modified. The only problem I have now is whether or not to spend dollars on an ancient sail. If not, the job will have to get put off until new sails can be afforded.

Good luck on your job.

Matt

Frank D. Miller wrote: We installed a bimini to our CD36 about 7 years ago. As I am just under six feet tall, my head would have hit the bimini, so we raised the boom approximately 6". That made all the difference. The sails just hoist a little higher with no modification necessary. If you'd like I will email you a picture.
