Have owned a 1981 33' Cape Dory for almost two years and have been plagued with an irritating problem. Have been unable to get rid of the smell of the diesel engine in the cabin area. Have cleaned out the engine well and the bilge area. Have also cleaned the fabric covered cushions(which had absorbed the scent) and have sprayed a deoderizer. Have been advised that the diesel fuel tank has an exhaust vent which may be the problem; however I don't know where that vent is located. Any ideas on how to rid the cabin area of the scent of a diesel engine?

Diesel Engine Smell in Cabin Area

Re: Diesel Engine Smell in Cabin Area
We had a diesel smell in the cabin a couple years back in our CD33. Took us a while to find that we had a slow fuel leak. Fixed the hose and haven't had the smell since then. I hope yours is as easy to solve.John Murphy wrote: ...smell of the diesel engine in the cabin area.
The vent on our fuel tank is on the transom. We have two vents, the one above the engine exhaust for the holding tank, the one to starboard for the fuel tank.
Good luck
