Out for the first time, all sales up and falling off the wind, ready to shut off the engine for some peace and quiet. I press the kill switch. Nothing, it just keeps on running. Not a big problem, I used the safety kill (deadman?) but now that it's shut down, any hints on what to look for as I try to fix it?

They literately "keep on running" don't they...
The control arm stop switch is a normally open (push to cloee) with a black and white wire going into the head cover. When pushed it connects the ignition to ground and stops the engine. The two wires run from the switch into the head cover and are connected in parallel with the emergency stop switch you used. Which means that corrosion may have found its way into the switch. Or the push in connectors (black and white) inside the head area are not making good contact.
Follow the wires as they come in next to the control cables. Make sure the end connectos are pushed completely in. If you are and you can not "see" the switch function at the wire ends then you should change the switch in the control arm. The arm is removeable by 2 bolts located near the pivot. Then there is a series of screws along the arm to split open the arm (clam shell). Use care to note how the control cable is connected in there. Both the forward/reverse linkage and speed control cable. You may be able to clean off the corrosion or reattach the wire (etc)...if not a new switch...
