Started working on the engine in preparation for launching the boat for the first time. I think the attached picture is a water lock, and it doesn’t look good. Any thoughts on this? What specifically is it? Can I find a replacement for it?
Also for fun here’s a picture of the prop shaft. Plan is to wire brush it, apply some sort of rust converter, and put it on the replace next haulout list. Does this seem like a spectacularly bad idea to anyone? Anything I should do to service the cutlass bearing?

Centek and Vetus are the water lift mufflers I’m familiar with and both are constructed of non-ferrous composite materials. Rust will be a thing of the past. The mild steel shelf it is installed upon can sometimes be treated with rust converter if enough steel is still there. Otherwise a new one can be made out of your choice of material.
Your prop shaft coupling is rusty but you should be able to wire brush it and coat it with Rustoleum until you decide if/when to replace it and you should inspect your Drivesaver flexible shaft coupling when you are taking things apart.
Your Cutless bearing should be replaced if your shaft has any side to side movement or if the material has worn away and deteriorated.
While you are there your stuffing box may as well be opened up and the packing material replaced. An alternative is to replace it with a dripless shaft seal such as the PSS brand unit.

Re: CD 36 Perkins 4108 exhaust system
Thanks Jim. I'll look into those water lift mufflers. I think the mild steel shelf will be okay but will take off the muffler and see on Sunday.
Will wire brush and coat the prop shaft coupling. I was taking out the raw water filter for cleaning and didn't have a chance to address the problem, but figured pictures would be useful for planning. So thank-you for taking the time to respond.
I think the cutlass bearing is okay but I will test and see.

By the looks of the rust on your coupling and the spray pattern on the hull, I would guess that your stuffing box is leaking and spraying
salt water all over the compartment. You should repack the stuffing box, in my opinion. GFO makes a good packing that leaks
very little or none at all. Also, if it were me, I would definitely
replace that shelf with fiberglass plate that can be tabbed in. McMaster-Carr is a good source.
