I have no instruments in the boat, and I want to start with a depth sounder. I want to avoid poking holes in my hull, and was told that a "puck" comes with the Horizon Series 45 Depth Sounder. ($250) Will the "puck" work 'through' the hull? Is there a "best" place to install it?
Will only "through hull" transducers work on this hull?
Does a 'stern mounted?" transducer work? TKS

A 'puck' should work. I installed a smaller Horizon (DS40) so the hole in bulkhead would be small (2" vs 3"). I used a bronze thru-hull transducer(Which was not necessary: I bought it before I found out I could do the job without drilling a hole in hull.)Instead of drilling a hole in hull, I glued a short section of 3" dia. PVC pipe to the inside of hull (plumb), added water, and dropped the transducer in the PVC pipe. Works fine. As far as location, not much choice in tight quarters. I placed my transducer forward of storage area (between the bulkhead and fiberglas storage wall) under setee/bunk. There is lots of info about this project in old messages on this board. Just type in the key word "depth sounder" or better yet "transducer". Good luck, bill
