1981 CD 28 Mainsheet Traveler Replacement

Post by ricksirois »

I'm planning on replacing the original main traveler track with a 4:1 system. What is the best way to access the existing traveler track nuts/bolts to remove them?
I am too big to crawl through the lazarettes to access the nuts. I can cut out the air cowlings on the rear deck so I can fit my hand through the hole to access the nuts. Cowlings are cheap to replace. I can then use slotted track, align the bolts with the existing holes and install with new nuts.

Or, I can drill out the bolts from the top, let the remaining bits fall into the bilge and install snap toggle nuts in the existing holes. I would then use pre-drilled track which allow me to conduct everything from the deck.

Has anyone tried anything similar? Suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Rick

I did a similar job on my CD27 a few years ago, and was fortunate to get a wrench on the bolts by reaching through the lazarette hatch. It was a blind bit of boat yoga but it worked.
