Ron,

I would not use that money on a roller/reefing unit, but rather a reefable staysail. It would be far less expensive, and just as useful. In my 10 years and 12,000 miles of sailing DeLaMer on Lake Superior, and in winds up to 55 kts., we have never seen a need to reduce that sail except in very high winds over 35kts. Here, a simple single reef would work wonders. The next stop would be complete dousing of the sail, to hoist the storm jib. Here you may want to have a storm staysail that could be hanked on in a hurry. An idea that I have played with is to upgrade the staysail stay with a 1/4 in. stay, then get a stormsail cut so that it could be hanked on *above* the existing staysail, and then hoisted on the existing halyard. It would have it's own sheets in the bag ready to go. The bag could be stowed on the bow pulpit, in a narrow zippered enclosure. We have done this already with the spinnaker. It is in it's own bag on the port side of the bow pulpit.Works well.

But I think that roller/furling on that stay would be money spent unwisely.

Hope this helps..and if you decide to go ahead with the furler anyway..let us know how it works and if it turns out to have hidden benefits. This is just my opinion, and is subject to further insights.

Cheers!

We have a Hood LD (line drive) furler on both the staysail and the genoa. The LD system is especially nice because it has a very compact furling drum, ideal for the staysail. I like the furling, no one needs to go foward ever unless bad weather is expected to run up a storm jib. We can remove the sail quickly and run up the storm jib.
