Volvo Penta MD7A

Post by jmaue »

My manual calls for 20W motor oil. Yet I cannot locate such oil. What do other MD7A owners use?

I used SAE30 for years, same for the MS10 gear box on my MD7B.

Mostly I used the diesel rated, but sometimes not with never any problem. That engine is a slow running and cold blooded so it is not so critical as a modern high speed turbo charged engine (like a VW TDI) would be. If you intend to run it in freezing temperature or below, you might think about a 20W-50 multiweight.

I've been using straight 30wt. Shell Rotella diesel many years in my MD7B and as Steve said the gear box. I also use this in the Walters V-drive as well. Very good diesel oil.
