Superclean headliner with ZUD

Post by Catherine Monaghan »

The headliner on Realization, our CD32, was pretty grundgy with blotches of discoloration, especially near the ports, and it had yellowed.

I purchased a product called Zud from our local supermarket (A&P). It is oxalic acid (as found in many fiberglass cleaners) so wear gloves. I usually use the BoatLife fiberglass cleaner when scrubbing the hull but it doesn't compare to Zud (it must be concentrated).

Anyway, you just smear it on with a damp sponge (I used the sponge side of a ScotchBrite pad), wait at least 5 minutes (I did about 1/3 of the headliner, I know it took more than 5 minutes), then wipe it off with a clean wet sponge. I used the sponge side of the ScotchBrite pad for that part too but turned it over and scrubbed with the abrasive side when I met a stubborn stain and it came off.

Realization's headliner is now bright white.

Yes...Zud is an old time favorite for copper bottom pans...but if you feel you would like to try something different...try LIQUID Zud (new product on your bronze ports....will crtainly, at least, get the green off if not shine them completely...does take a little elbow grease...

Don't get ZUD on plastic cowl vents--BAD SCENE

Post by M. R. Bober »

ZUD wil dissolve the smooth finish on the vents on your Cape Dory (unless you've upgraded to metal). It's also tough on gelcoat as it "softens" the surface.
