Rocna Anchor for CD25?

Post by john_mendelson »

Hi,

New owner of a 1975 CD25 here and looking to replace the old danforth anchor. Does anyone have experience with the Rocna anchors and, if so, what size is appropriate for the CD25? Sailing area will mostly be Cape Ann to Cape Cod and the Islands.

Thanks,

John

From their chart, it looks like about 22 lbs. Most folks recommend going up, one boat size. but this one goes up to 36 feet. I'm not sure what kind of anchor holds better up where you are. Dee

Hi John,
Just one data point...I've been using a Rocna 10 (10Kg / 22 lbs) as my overnight anchor on my CD25D for about 2 years. So far I've had no problems with it and it sets very well here on the Maine coast. I decided it wasn't necessary to size up to the next size Rocna for the same reason Dee pointed out. At 25 feet my boat was near the bottom of the size range for the Rocna 10. The next size up, is a Rocna 15 that weighs 33lbs. Of course it still depends on the bottom conditions where you are anchoring and the weather/sea conditions. I can't say I've been at anchor with the Rocna in any really trying conditions, but to me it seemed a good compromise.

Appreciate the feedback. Will take a closer look at the Rocna site. Thanks.

Just for fun, ask this question on SailNet! Sit back and watch the fireworks. We are getting a new anchor this year as well, and for our area I'll be going with a fortress. We are mud mud and more mud and a little sand.

We have been using a Rocna 12kg (33lb) on our Yankee 38 (16000 lb displacement) sloop for seven years as our primary anchor out here in the PNW in all kinds of bottoms. I think they are great anchors, all around. I have a Rocna 10kg on my daily commuter, a downeast style General Marine 26 (10,000 lb displacement), which is in daily service on the Puget Sound, year round, regardless of the weather. As your primary anchor for your CD 25, I think the 10kg is quite adequate. The 33kg would be more weight than I would want on the bow, and I think only necessary in very heavy weather anchoring conditions (stowed below unless and until needed).
