Typhoon cabin sole
I hope the picture comes out. Not sure how to add it.

Re: Typhoon cabin sole
I would worry that if it sits on the floor, any dirt/sand that got between this grate and the floor would grind against the floor.
I set sail in the confident hope of a miracle

Re: Typhoon cabin sole
Do you mean to replace the sole inside the cabin? How big is it? If small enough and nothing sits over it and it is easy to remove that could work. But, any small thing you drop or ends up on the floor will likely end up in the bilge. To include sand, grime and whatnot. If not easy to remove could be frustrating.
My entire cabin sole from bow to stern is bare black walnut planks. The entire sole can be removed in five minutes. Many variations if this approach could be used on the small sole on a Ty. But the lattice is an interesting idea.

Re: Typhoon cabin sole
Your boat cabin is magnificent.
I was thinking of just putting the teak grate on top of the cabin sole. I would even look good in the cockpit. Every time I step in the cabin I bring dirt from shoes. If I could just take out the grate and hose it down it would be easier to clean and look very nice.
You guys think it would be problematic so I will take a pass.

Re: Typhoon cabin sole
Thanks.
I don’t know how you would secure the grate below so it wouldn’t be a hazard. And the dirt would still get tracked in the boat. But instead of treating the systems consider treating the cause.
We don’t wear shoes on the boat that we wear ashore. In the winter our sea-boots don’t leave the boat. In the summer out sneakers remain in the dinghy. We sail mostly barefoot. We also keep a micro fiber cloth on the bridge deck we wipe our feet on before we step below so almost no dirt gets tracked below.

Re: Typhoon cabin sole
Instead of a heavy grate that would let all the dirt fall through and onto the cabin sole which you would still have to clean up, you could get a little carpet. It would feel much better on your bare feet and you could just take it out and shake the dirt off. Try not to get it wet and salty as I know from experience that it will get nasty if you leave it that way, Steve.
Re: Typhoon cabin sole
I don't like carpet in a boat. Guess I will just have to keep using the baby wipes to clean. Really not that big of a deal. I really liked how the grate looked.

Steve, I agree. We have a 20” x30” oriental rug we use at the foot of the companionway when not actively underway. It does catch any debris that makes it past the bridge deck.
