Arietta's cruise to The Basin

We took a cruise to The Basin on Vinalhaven Island last week aboard Arietta, our Cape Dory 22. Here are some photos from that cruise:

That is a beautiful place. Looks a lot cooler than it is here. I know how can a picture look like a temperature but it does look cool and refreshing. LOL, Dennis

I'm not sure where you are, but it probably is cooler here than there, at least right now. There were days this summer when it was hotter here in Maine than it was in Florida, but last week the heat wave that gripped the state for most of the summer finally broke. Our boat doesn't have enough battery capacity to run a fan all night, so we had to wait for cool weather before we could do any overnight trips. Hopefully we'll get a few more cruises in before it gets too cold to sail! (We don't have any heat onboard, either.)

The Basin really is beautiful. We've cruised as far north as Nova Scotia and as far south as Venezuela, and it is our favorite anchorage anywhere. It's not for the faint of heart: the falls at the entrance have claimed many boats; we even know of a lobsterman who lost his boat trying to transit the entrance. It's not a place I would recommend to the casual cruiser. But we love it. Perhaps the difficulty of entering and leaving safely is one of its charms.

That's what owning our boats is all about. Just enjoying the simple things for a change. Good for you, I try to do short trips and they still bring us a special feeling every time
