Installing Instruments CD25D

Post by Dennis Hogan »

I'm getting ready to install Horizon instruments, wind speed/point, speed/log and depth. I have all the work on the mast done for the wind speed and I'm getting ready to cut some holes for the instruments and for the impeller. I'm going to try an in hull puck transducer for the sounder. Any suggestions or advice welcome.

Just installed new speed and depth instruments. Used exisitng holes in hull for transducers, with some slight enlargement. At suggestion of a friend, I cut the holes for the instruments using a plywood jig and upcutting router blade and collar on my router. These were cut out around the former holes (ofcourse these had to be enlarged also). Old screw holes for old insturments were used to secure the plywood jig with appropriate sized hole. Much neater that trying to use a jig saw. Established a "vertical" reference line and jig and instruments were aligned with this. Both were mounted to port of companionway since my compass in on the stbd of my 25D. Good luck.

Dennis,
When we owned 'Carina' (CD22 #40, 1983-1996) I mounted the instruments in a plexiglas hatch-board. I duplicates the lower drop-in hatch in plexiglas. Mounted the instruments in the plexiglas. Used quick connectors for the cables. There were no holes drilled in the bulkhead. During inclement weather, insert the upper hatch-board, and the plexiglas lets light down below.
Good luck.

I like the idea of the in-hull transducer.

Think about arranging the instruments and radio and stereo to minimize the effect on the compass. ie- instruments go on the bulkhead opposite the compass.

If there's room, you might want to try mounting the instruments on a
board pivoted at one side of the companionway. That way they'd be visible inside as well as outside.

Let us know how you make out.
