CD25D Engines from 1981-1985

Post by MHBsailor »

Calling all CD25D skippers, I'm trying to put together a list of the engine choices for the production years of 1981-1985 as I've heard that the HP was increased at some point. Would be interested to know what diesel engine your fine vessel came with from the factory, and if you've subsequently re-engined, and if you did so because you weren't satisfied with the performance of what I understand was originally a 7.5 HP 1GM or for other reasons (e.g., it needed to be rebuilt and you took the opportunity to upgrade). Thanks so much! JD

I am the caretaker of S/V Bali Ha'i, a 1982 Cape Dory 25D, hull number 0069.

She has the original Yanmar 1GM (7.5 hp) engine. Running hours are unknown. I think in circa 1983/1984 Cape Dory installed the 1GM10 (9 hp) which was very similar (almost identical) to the 1GM but with slightly more hp. Most websites round up the hp from 7.5 to 8 and from 9 to 10.

Good luck with your survey :!:

I have CD25D hull #126. The VIN indicates she was built/launched in August 1983, with the 1GM.
She's a little underpowered in a headwind. No plans to replace the engine unless necessary.

My 25D is #111, she was built in Feb 1983 with a Yanmar 1GM (7 1/2hp). Spent most of her life on the Great Lakes in fresh water so the engine is in pretty good shape. The engine is reliable, but definitely underpowered if you have to deal with a lot of current. Toad Marine has a nice table showing Yanmar engine models. Toad shows the 1GM10 (9hp) as available in 1983, but it looks like it must have been late in the year.
All the best

While SUSAN B was listed as having a 7.5 hp 1 GM, when I finally scrubbed the grease and grime off the engine id plate it read 6.5 hp. Susan B is a 1983 model. These engines are all the same +/- . The more powerful ones are bored out a little, as I understand it..
