New Sculling Oar Lock
The sculling oar lock I built for the Far Reach during the six year rebuild showed significant endgrain checking. I was never thrilled with the design but it’s what I came up with at the time. There is a lot of twisting torque applied when sculling the boat so I had been thinking about a new design for awhile. I had some scrap iroko and offcut 1/4” thick silicon bronze. I made up a pattern out of plywood and test fitted it to see if it would work. I added some curves to give it a little gracefulness. I wanted the 5/16” bolts holes to line up with the holes that secured the original bracket. And I also wanted to use the same bolts that fit in a tight spot so I was limited in thickness and width. I added a bottom plate that I fit flush into the under side of the iroko and is through bolted with the socket, the top plate, and the iroko. It’s super strong. I am happy with how it turned out. Eventually all the bronze will turn green and contrast nicely with the white painted iroko.

- The original design worked OK. But the design was not suitable as it exposed too much endgrain which eventually began to check significantly. Also I wanted the oar lock socket a little lower and further aft.

- I incorporated a bottom plate through bolted with the socket that sits on top of the top plate which can be seen in the last photo.

- I think it looks pretty good. Should be very strong too.
