New Sculling Oar Lock

Post by John Stone »

The sculling oar lock I built for the Far Reach during the six year rebuild showed significant endgrain checking. I was never thrilled with the design but it’s what I came up with at the time. There is a lot of twisting torque applied when sculling the boat so I had been thinking about a new design for awhile. I had some scrap iroko and offcut 1/4” thick silicon bronze. I made up a pattern out of plywood and test fitted it to see if it would work. I added some curves to give it a little gracefulness. I wanted the 5/16” bolts holes to line up with the holes that secured the original bracket. And I also wanted to use the same bolts that fit in a tight spot so I was limited in thickness and width. I added a bottom plate that I fit flush into the under side of the iroko and is through bolted with the socket, the top plate, and the iroko. It’s super strong. I am happy with how it turned out. Eventually all the bronze will turn green and contrast nicely with the white painted iroko.

The original design worked OK. But the design was not suitable as it exposed too much endgrain which eventually began to check significantly. Also I wanted the oar lock socket a little lower and further aft.

I incorporated a bottom plate through bolted with the socket that sits on top of the top plate which can be seen in the last photo.

I think it looks pretty good. Should be very strong too.
