Greetings folks,
I purchased a 28 last year that had been reengined with a volvo 2003.I traveled around Michigan and down the Mississippi (not the tenn-tom). Needless to say I did a lot of motoring and hit a lot of debris. This had quite deleterious effects on the drivetrain. I broke one motor mount and trashed the cutlass bearing to the point that I will have to epoxy a new one in place. I need advice on replacing both of these items. Please include any suppliers of parts that would be required. I also need to replace the shaft and would appreciate a source for this. I have noticed on another 28 in the yard I am in that it has an external support bearing on the outside of the hull. My 28 is a 76 and I am wondering if this is a later addition that may help alleviate stress on the bearing. Any replies appreciated.

Re: Cutlass bearing replacement CD28
I had the cutlass bearing on LIQUIDITY replaced three years ago. My mechanic did it, at an all in reasonable cost. Given the effort in removing the old bearing and installing the new one, you might want to opt for someone who had done it before.
As for the external support, not on my boat.

Re: Cutlass bearing replacement CD28
I just walked in the door from woriking on my boat-a cd 28-1974-I am replacing the cultass bearing-I just paid $50 for a direct replacement-3" long-1 1/4 outside dia for a 1" shaft-from Trellex Morse-3588 Main St. Keokuk IA 52632-319-524-8430-I have my engine out-so now is the time-it appears they epoxied the bearing into the shaft-with no set screws or flange-one year it actually backed out on me while I was motoring and stopped when it hit the propeler-it made a noise like I had cats in my gear-box-I couldn't figure out what was wrong unti I went swimming one day-and I slid it back in and re-epoxied it when I pulled the boat-I assume the bearing and shaft were spinning in the hole-seemed not to be a big deal-anyway-I called the manufactuer today and they said you caould epoxy the bearing in with what they reccommend-"Chock Fast Orange Epoxy?" God knows what that is-I will use west systems-the old bearing came out easily -without your shaft in just grab it with a pair of needlenoze pliers and it bends inward-its only 1/16" thich bronze-and I began turning and unscrewing it-you cannot bang it out from the inside as there is a lip where the dia of the tube narrows so you cannot push it in too far-I will end up with about 1" of the bearing sticking out of the tube at the stern and will try to hold it in place with a "glob of hoye" -there shoud be a glob of epoxy holdong yours in as well-what have you got to loose? I just do not know if you can do it with the shaft in place-because it is extremely unlikely you will be able to get the keyway that holds the shaft to the flange out-however-if you are replacing the shaft and don't mind cutting it-thats another story-then you can fust pull it out the stern end-of course there is very little room to use a saw in the back of the motor-anyway-the direct replacement is a 3" long by 1+1/4 outside dia bearing for a 1" shaft-and they are available.Neil Gordon wrote: I had the cutlass bearing on LIQUIDITY replaced three years ago. Re: Cutlass bearing replacement CD28
Whatever you do, do not bang around the Volvo transmission-or you will be replacing that too! I just had my cutless bearing replaced-and in order to do the work the mechanic actually took a sawsall and cut the shaft so that I would slide out easily. (a new shaft was needed as something had wrapped around it and caused a deep cut!)At $55.00 an hour, it sure saved me a bunch of money also!
Hope this helps
