Mast replacement advice on a CD 22 – Spartan vs. Dwyer?

Post by mhovis »

I'm new here, but very happy to be. I have adopted a CD22 that was dismasted in Hurricane Harvey and am working to bring her back to life. I am trying to determine my best options for mast replacement. I have contacted Spartan (rig-rite) and attempted to work with them on a bid for my mast but have found them to be surprisingly unhelpful and generally unresponsive. While I'd like to replace with an OEM solution, I'm now looking at other options. Does anyone have any experience with Dwyer masts for CDs? Any recommendations in general that I should know about?

Thanks in advance. I'll be posting quite a few questions here I can tell already.

One possibility is to make a pattern of your wanted mast section (maybe from the rig-rite web site) and take it to a salvage yard.
If you live in New England, there are a few yards in Quincy, south of Boston. - Jean

I purchased a new mast for a West Wight Potter from Dwyer about 15 years ago. They were very easy to work with and bent over backwards getting me some extra parts (I forgot to order) in time for our vacation trip. The contrast with just trying to get prices from Rig-Rite for some traveler parts was like night and day.

For used parts you might try:

(I haven't had any dealing with them but have seen them advertising used masts on Craigs List)

I second Dwyer, have had good experiences with them. They have been around forever and were OEM on many boats, they should have the right blank you need as well as the parts to build a new mast.

Don't forget US Spars. I have a US Spars boom on the Far Reach and so far I am happy with it. And though it sounds daunting, you might consider making a hollow box style wood mast for your CD 22. I have talked to some folks that have made hollow spars and it does not seem to be a difficult as one imagines. A CD 22 mast would not be that big either.

I have nothing good to say about the rig-rite management. During our rebuild we needed to repair the bottom of our mast so I contacted rig-rite to develop a solution. They were so difficult, rude, and unresponsive that I decided to built a new rig using a Spar-Craft extrusion, taller and lighter, and happy that I did.

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I hope to be knowledgeable enough after my rebuild to contribute back. I'll compare bids from Dwyer and US Spars. I'm afraid going with wood is a little intimidating to me now, but sure would be beautiful. I'll follow up with a review of my chosen solution once completed. Thanks again.

Klacko Spars, in Oakville, Ont just built two complete masts for our Schooner. They are awesome folks(family run business) and my masts are amazing! Not to mention the substantial savings by buying Canadian and no sales tax on importing.

Just saw this post...Dwyer is highly recommended. Their DM450 is a fit for the CD22. I have a 1984 CD22 that at one time had a mast replacement, prob in the early/mid 99's. It's a Dwyer D459.

I know several people who've gone their for spar parts and work.

RigRite doesn't seem to have a great reputation on this board, but I've never dealt with them...

Thanks everyone. After consideration, and several phone calls I went ahead and placed my order with Dwyer. Customer service has been good, responsive, and genuinely helpful / informative. I'll receive the mast and several related components sometime next week and will follow up with a review of what I receive.

I don't need a mast at this time but decided to look up Dwyer. Turns out they are 11 miles from my house. I almost wish I needed one :D
