CD1997 27 needs an alternator

Post by clipps »

We have a 1997CD 27 that we sail on Smith Mountain Lake, VA. We are in need of a repair/replacement for the original alternator for a 1977Yanmar YSB-8 engine. Thanks for any input Carroll

Carroll,
I can't offer too much advice, but if your local harbor cannot recommend someone to repair it, maybe a reputable automotive repair place can recommend someone.
By the way, I doubt that you have a 1997 Cape Dory 27, I think the last one was made in 1984.

The Yanmar is from 1977. Odds are the boat is from the same.

Nippon Denso alternators are notoriously popular for auto/aviation/marine conversions. The 40A model is used just about everywhere.

1. Have to figure out how to mount it.
2. They need usually 3 wires. B+ output to the battery, +12V to the IG terminal to excite the field, and a connection to an idiot light.
3. Pulley size and belt alignment need to be puzzled out.

The mounting can usually be achieved by adding spacers and shifting the adjustment arm as needed, yes this is a fabrication process.

Getting the tachometer output is simple, the pressed cover is removed momentarily and a wire attached to one of the stator connections. The tach simply converts an AC sine wave to a frequency, and then to RPM indication. There are adjusting terminals/screws on the back of the tach to work with nearly any alternator.

Look for the dirtyest old starter/alternator shop run by somebody over 70 and start a conversation. A well staffed marina can do the work, but will empty $500 from your wallet.

Post a picture of your current alternator to discuss options.

The interweb thinks you have a Hitachi LR135-31. It's commonly available and cheap. ($150).

Go with a straight replacement if you can.

Call an alternator shop with the model number off the back of the alternator, they will tell you if they can fix it or not. I currently have a Mitsubichi from my Westerbeke 10-2 (CD26D, 1988, hull #78) at Armature Service Co in Little Rock AR. Much cheaper than buying from marine dealership.
