1975 CD 28 Purchase

Post by Kevin Malone »

I am looking at a 1975 CD 28, well cared for and lightly used fresh water boat. Original jib replaced w/150% roller furler and main replaced w/roller furler as well (just aft of mast). Original 25hp Volvo engine, not sure of engine hours, 4800 miles on original ship's log. Asking price is $27,500. I am looking for input on prices and info re: the engine, I am concerned about engine's age and wondering how to evaluate its condition. Any other input is appreciated, this will be my first experience as a boat owner. Boat will be sailed on Northern Lake Michigan. Thanks for your time.

My Volvo is 13 hp. You sure it's a 25?

How's the equipment list? The price is on the high side. LIQUIDITY was around $20,000, four years ago with an extensive inventory. OTOH, the boat needed a new main and a new furler.

You should have the boat surveyed, including a sea trial.

Good luck... the 28 is a great boat!!!

I just purchased a l979 CD 28 for a wee bit higher in the price range-which was probably too high-but the former owner just replaced the sails with Ulmann Sails, including a new gennaker, new canvas (dodger. etc) new furler (Harken) new frig system, two autohelms, l28 garmin system, 1000 watt inverter for his TV and other goodies, rebuilt Volvo engine (13 horsepower) five batteries, universal lighting system (he wanted to go to Mexico as well as Canada), etc. etc. etc.

Be sure to get the boat surveyed as well as the engine-you will need this for any insurance company anyhow. Costs will probably in the five hundred range, which includes a pull out, engine analysis, etc. Best money you will ever spend!

I paid $26,000 for my 1983 28 two years ago. That was on the high side, but I knew the original owner and the boat, so I knew it was well cared for. It was well equipped as well. $27,500 seems high for a 1975 but there are so many variables! If it helps I could fax or snail mail the equipment list from my purchase. Let me know.

Remember, no matter how well equipped a boat is, you'll want some different stuff (my wife never understands this law of the sea). I'm not sure how a roller main compares to a traditional (I'm sure it costs more). The 28 is a great boat. You'll also have access to the Lake Michigan Cape Dory Owners Assoc. Our Rondi was in Fayette last year and is set for Frankfurt this summer. BTW, if you want to compare boats you're welcome to stop and look at mine (Milwaukee area). She's indoors in my shed (lights and heat).
Good luck!

In Feb '98 I paid $18,500 for a CD28 (1977) with a 18HP
Universal deisel installed 1995. The boat was in excellent
condition but lacked a holding tank.

The surveyer found a whole list of small things to be done
but it was well worth the effort needed to fix them.

I looked at five CD28 and choose this one mainly because
of the new engine.

Good luck.
