need advice repower/cd30

Post by Ben Thomas »

I'am looking at having to install new engine in my cd30 cutter (82). the volvo md7a is very tired and the c.a.v. injector pump is giving up the ghost. I've spoken to a few folks in the marine diesel business. one fellow did not reccomend the westerbeke even though an outstanding engine but I have the walters v. drive 2:1 ration and he says many problems arise with trying to match up. the different angles 24* versus the 15* with shaft and transmission etc. he suggested the universal 20hp. 3cylinder. also the yanmar 18 horse. don't know iftrying to match my walters RV 10D with yanmar will work. everything is shockingly expensive!! price of yanmar/instrument cluster and partial install (I can do a lot) is quoted around $6800.00 whew..

anyone have any input?? need opinions other than diesel salespeople. I've browsed the old threads but need dio-log (cannot remember that spelling.)
thanks, ben

Hey Ben,

Well, been there, but did the rebuild when I found out about the price for a new engine. Or CD30 (83) is like new now. But in the process of getting to that point, I did some looking and found that there was a Westerbeke dealer/engineering firm down in NC or SC I believe, (they advertise in Soundings)that quoted me $5500 for a Westerbeke 18, engineering a 'personality plate' to mate the bolt hole pattern of the new engine to the Volvo reverse gear ***with V drive Attached*** (ie: no angular problems then..the personality plate would eliminate that), and shipping to NW Wisc. This was 5-6 years ago as near I can remember. SO that number would be probably in the $6-7k range now.

A new Injector Pump for the Volvo MD7A is around $4800 I believe, so you probably don't want ot go that route. But are you sure that the pump cannot be rebuilt? Mine was, and it works great! I sent it to a specialty shop, and they charged $750 to rebuild it to new standards.
I would recommend that you look into this angle first (if you haven't already).

Hi there guys. Is there any way to test the overall condition of an injector pump on a Volvo MD7a while it is still on a working motor ?

Thx,

Alan

Alan,

Yes I believe so. You will need to talk with a Volvo tecnician however, as they should have a fitting that screws in tot he inj. pump and will measure the pressure it develops, as well as the bleed-off of the pressure between pulses. A full functional test would need to be done at the rebuilders location however, as there are extremely tight tolerances involved, which will need to be checked.
The mechanic can give you a go-nogo to the rebuild step however.

Protect that puppy with good filtering and clean fuel..it's a darn expensive element of that engine!

Good Luck,

Based on what I've seen of the Columbia Bar, I'd think you would be wanting the most HP possible. The 13 hp that the MD7 puts out can really be challanged if you've got wind and tide at the bow. Also, if you make it to the "Sound" be aware of the currents we have in the San Juans and at Admiralty Inlet, some can be mighty swift.
