Engine trouble - Anyone use Johanson Boat Works in Rockland,

Post by jen1722terry »

Hey sailors,

Well, after getting our new transmission installed a few weeks back we now have another issue with our original U-M-25-5421.
We discovered a slow oil leak along the starboard side of the gear cover, probably from a failing gasket. This new issue, in addition to some others (lousy engine access, need for a new water pump and exhaust riser), have led us to consider a new Beta Marine Engine rather than throw more good money after bad.

As we're still over in Tenants Harbor, ME and are reluctant to run the engine much with the leak, our closest Beta Certified dealer is Johanson Boat Works just up the road in Rockland.

Our question is: have any of you done business with Johanson and, if so, do you have any impressions you can share.

Any advice will be most appreciated.

I chartered boats with them for a dozen years + and have had them take care of my CD MS 300 since buying it in 2005. The first couple of years it was in their charter fleet. The reason I went with them was because of being familiar with their charter operation. It's a family run business but they can do just about any type of work. They did my repower five years back. They build boats from bare hulls and major refits. I have always found Peter Johanson to be very responsive and their rates reasonable. Their head mechanic Jonsey has made "house calls" to fix some items in Boothbay Harbor and Tennants Harbor and walk me through some repairs on the phone. I'd recommend them highly.

Hi--
Coming late to this thread, but I can recommend Johanson very highly. They did the repair on our CD 28 (deck and rigging) after the marina in Camden lost a boat off a mooring a few years back and it came down on us (note: the marina has new owners now!). Johanson was a joy to deal with and did great work.
Best,
Robert

I think they wound up using Robinhood. I'd be interested in hearing how it went.
