CD10 oarlock placement...

Post by Artichoke »

Fellow CD10 owners,

I recently had the gunwhales on my CD10 replaced. Unfortunately, I no longer have the old rails and thus do not know original position of the oarlocks in order to put them back on.

Could someone with a CD10 please send me the fore and aft measurements of oarlock position on their boat? I would need distance from bow to front edge of oarlock and outside transom quarter to aft edge of same oarlock.

Would really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
Aaron

On my CD-10, from the stern to the aft edge of the aft oarlock is 35" (tape measure hooked over the transom).

Then from the forward side of the aft oarlock (excluding the width of the oar lock) is another 37" to the fore oarlock.

The measurement from the bow to the fore oarlock is not overly accurate since my boat was upside down when measured. Consequently I had to measure on the outside, and my gunwales now come to a point at the bow, which is not typical. Regardless, this measurement is 52", but could differ from others by as much as 1" to 2".

BTW you posted this in the Buy/Sell section so it probably did not get the level of attention that it may have in the Cape Dory section.

Hopefully this helps :)

I restored my CD10 and will check these measurements tomorrow. I do know that it was recommended that the oarlocks be raised slightly as well as moved aft a small amount. I did move them a bit aft and it makes it easier to row. As for raising then an inch off the gunwale I did not do that and wish I had because it would prevent those not used to rowing from scraping the oar along the top of the gunwale.

Thanks for the measurements, Matt!

Dick... do your measurements read about the same as Matt's?

I finally had a chance to get the oarlock placements. After restoring the CD10 I researched the potential problems with oarlock placement and decided that 11" aft of each seat edge was ideal. It gives leg/knee room while rowing and works flawlessly. I did not place risers under the oarlocks and I only get minor wear on the gunwales. Just make sure that the oars are 7 feet long and avoid setting them too deep in the water when rowing. I just sailed the boat for the first time and although very tippy, it will be nice in the lighter winds. Am now adjusting centerboard control lines, main sheet bridle etc.
