New boom with internal main sail controls for old CD25

Post by Astronomertoo »

Does anyone know if any of the old CD25 owners have replaced their boom with a modern design with internal reefing and outhaul controls?
I searched and did not find anything.
Thanks

What's the motivation?

I have internal controls in my boom, and wish I didn't. The blocks inside the boom are completely invisible and inaccessible. It's all fine until something breaks and you have to fix it. It's virtually impossible to fix under way. Before you go this route, think hard about what your motivation is for doing it. It may look cleaner externally, but it introduces a level of complexity inside the boom. If you don't keep the outhaul taught at all times, even in the off-season, you run the risk of the outhaul line jumping a fiddle block inside the boom, where you can't get at it.

Not a CD25 but I agree with the criticism of internal boom controls. External makes re rigging extremely simple. I was just going over my rig this weekend and worked on some adjustments of topping lift, reef lines etc. Very quick. My dock mate spends several days sorting out his Island Packet rig with internal controls. Very complex and time consuming. The boat got launched, sails bent on and we were sailing that morning. I am glad the only line rigged internally is the outhaul - which I need to replace soon.

Any suggestions on best ways to do that? I saw a large time matrix of doom when I considered taking that on at launch time!

These are all good points which I did not consider. I do not need additional work lists anyway, but it sure sounded good.

On both my CD25 & CD28, I've been very happy using a pair of bullet blocks that give me 4-to-1 purchase for the outhaul.
