Help! In need of new water tanks!

Post by Ken Cave »

A friend of mine (who I just found also owns a Cape Dory 28) has no water tanks as the former owner took them out. He does have a tank for his head in the bow of the boat, but can't find the dealer or manufacturer that has the water tanks. Any help would be appreciated.

New water tanks!

Post by John »

I need to do some work/inspection on my water tanks, probably in the next week or two. I will let you know what I find. I do know that I have 2 tanks, 30 gal each, 1 port and 1 starboard, under the seatee's.

I've been dealing with a holding tank saga for many days now. If you scroll back through the posts you will find some info regarding the PE tanks (polyethelene) used in the Cape Dory's. Kracor Inc. was the original supplier to Cape Dory. They use a roto- molded process to make the tanks. They still have the aluminum mold for the holding tank that fits the CD30 (also the 28 and others)but I'm not sure about any other tanks. To make new tanks that are not in current production they will charge a $200 setup fee plus the price of the tank. It gets rather expensive. The holding tank retail price is $361 as an example. That's very high. The tank is actually $161 - not bad.

I'm sure the water tanks would be more if they have to do a custom setup to produce them because they are larger tanks. They may however have some of those tanks in stock or perhaps are still making them for other boat manufacturers.

Call them and describe the year and model of the boat. If you have difficulty with the person answering the phone ask to speak with someone in the engineering department.

You can check the web sites of Ronco Plastics, they have a variety of tanks on their website, reasonable prices. Try Taylor Plastics who will extrude weld custom tanks (I'm dealing with them right now on an estimate for the holding tank). You might be able to find stock tanks at Sealand or Todd. You could probably have tanks made by Hall Products (Peg Hall's company) but they are expensive in my opinion. You can try TankDepot also (look through the past messages about the holding tank for their phone number).

You could also go with Nauta, Vetus or Plastimo flexible tanks.

You can build your own tank using West System Epoxy. Check their website to get technical advice.

You could also check with Headhunters Inc. for tanks that would be appropriate for potable water. They specialize in holding tanks but there is little difference between the two. It's worth checking into. They will send you a catalog.

There are lots of other tank companies, just run searches on the web under different descriptions. I've found many.
