halyard organizer plates

I am going to lead the halyards back to the cockpit this Spring and have just seen these plates in the Dwyer Aluminum Mast Co. web site. Does anyone have experience with them?

I am doing the same job on my CD27 this Spring. I followed Richard Gelfand's advice on this board and bought a Dwyer plate through M&E Marine. He says his installation is great.

The only way to install it is to unstep the mast, remove the aluminum mast step, drill custom holes in the plate (on a drill press--it's stainless steel) to match the holes in the step and then rebolt the step over the plate. Richard put a plastic barrier between the plate and the mast step to prevent steel-to-aluminum galvanic corrosion. You may need longer bolts depending on whether the plate and plastic's thickness moves the boltheads up too high. I won't know that until I get the step off. I still have to decide whether the plate will interfere with the electrical fittings near the base of the mast, and how to route lines by the dorade box. Still too cold in NY to fiddle around with it!!

Perhaps Richard can pipe in with more helpful details of his actual experience.

Keith,

Another option is to install a mast bail about 3 or 4 inches from the bottom of the mast. If you install a bail, you only have to drill through the mast rather than through the deck and you don't have to remove the step. We have this setup on Realization.

I've done as Catherine recommends, on a CD 28. However, I had existing (one) block for main halyard, and with roller furling on the genoa that's all I needed. Angle of lead becomes a real problem, and I think it gets worse as boat size decreases.

Another use for the eye on the mast that I found useful was for rigging the jiffy reefing back to the cockpit end of the boom. I know there are differing opinions on this, but I found it quite useful to be able to reef without leaving the helm, as I single handed quite a bit. Using the (former) jib winch and cam cleat for the main halyard it made for relatively simple reefing.

On a 27', do you have access to whatever backs up the step assembly? I'd be curious about the outcome of your efforts, where you place the organizer/turning blocks, etc.

Bill and all...I used the same (original) bolts, the job went very smoothly. There was no conflict with electrical on my boat. I used a "clam shell" fitting (faced aft) for wires to pass from the mast through the deck, and filled it with silicon. Least expensive solution and has worked without any leaks for two years. I still have not led halyards or other lines aft. I would be interested in where anyone who has, has placed deck organizers, spinlocks or cam cleats, and deck winches. Has anyone run reefing lines aft in such a system?

Thanks.
