Serenitas is a CD28 (1978) Hull 205. I'm pretty sure she has the original cutless bearing and stuffing box. She was out of the water for several years but I'm giving her lots of use. There is a slight (under 1/8" motion at the bearing and all but unnoticeable vibration. The surveyor (3 years ago) said to keep an eye on it. My question to other 28ers and CDers in general is: should I replace both while still on the hard. If so how big a deal is it. In the past some have said the cutless bearing was a real bear of a job requiring a new shaft etc. others have said it need not be that difficult. Don't mean to fuse two subjects so you can respond to either one and I'll be grateful.

Paul:
At this moment, I am having this done on a Cape Dory 28 #227.
What we found was that I have also the original one-inch shaft which was pitted. We are exchanging this to a one inch stainless shaft.
You might look at the stuffing box also. Mine was leaking-and it is a bear to get to to repair (and replace) We are installing a P.S.S Shaft Seal System (packless sealing system) to solve this problem. Cost a little more-but I am getting too old to crawl around on my tummy!
Hope this helps.

Re: Cutless Bearing Replacement
Mine was replaced as recommended by the surveyor. I had a mechanic do it, but it was straightforward and not expensive. No problem with the shaft, etc.
