Dean:
Really nice photo story/journal. Thoughtful and heartwarming comments.
I have very fond memories from years ago of spending a day with you and Marvo at your house on a cold, rainy March day while looking at your Cape Dory 25D and inspecting her sails in your "sail loft" which is depicted in your photo spread.
Looks like you had a great sailing season. Please tell Marvo I said "hello".
S/V Bali Ha'i is doing well. I managed to get her back in the water yesterday. Hopefully, next week we will start working on her new Awlgrip deck, etc. The Awlgrip expert is a little behind in her schedule because of some lousy weather in South Florida the past few weeks.

Hi Robert,
Glad to hear you're giving the boat the TLC she deserves. We've never regretted having our hull done with Awlgrip.
Odd to hear of a boat getting launched in late October!

Where did you get your canvas cover? Did you shape it or have it done?

Hi Greg and Jennifer.
Go to http://www.fairclough.com
The only drawback (other than the work erecting it and the price) is that depending on conditions, often snow will not slide off like on a plastic cover. The Fairclough cover is canvas; it is very sturdy and well-made. But some friends of ours had to leave their boat in NH while they were living here in Maine one winter; the snow piled up so high at one point (a rough winter) that the (Fairclough) frame collapsed. I think it's a terrific cover/frame but you do have to be living nearby and probably snow-rake it 2-3 times per winter.
Erecting the whole rig takes the two of us 3-4 hours, and we always need a third body for the heave-ho of the cover over the ridge. But keep in mind that we are 64 and 65.

That is the reason that we went with a cover from The Canvas Store. http://www.thecanvasstore.comDean Abrasion wrote:...Erecting the whole rig takes the two of us 3-4 hours, and we always need a third body for the heave-ho of the cover over the ridge. But keep in mind that we are 64 and 65. Dean
For our 27 it is a three piece cover that zips together once it is in place. It still takes two of us 3-4 hours, a little bit less if the boat is on the hard.

Our friends with a CD36 had a one-piece Fairclough, which was way too heavy for them. They sent it back and Fairclough cut it in half and added a zipper. So I am guessing that if you initially $pecify that option it would be available.

Actually they can modify it and add the zippers which effectively cut it in half athwartships at any time. I had it done after my second or third season. It's much easier to manhandle now. I've never had to use a snow rake on it. I'm sure storing it just a couple yards from the water moderates the overall snowfall amounts and how long the snow will sit before it slides off.Dean Abramson wrote:Our friends with a CD36 had a one-piece Fairclough, which was way too heavy for them. In this photo taken last January the white line seen amidships is the zipper.

Re: The truth about fall sailing
As an alternative to hoisting the body bag up the ladder, I experimented with a new method this year. We laid the Fairclough cover out on the ground alongside the boat, and flaked it like a sail. Then we then tied a couple of hoisting lines to the grommets near the ends, and with each of us working one of the lines, hauled it up & over the frame. It worked out really well.

Sailing involves the courage to cherish adventure and the wisdom to fear danger. Knowing where one ends, and the other begins, makes all the difference.

The Truth About Fall Sailing in Miami:
I wish I knew how to post a snap shot photo of Accuweather for Miami today. Temps reached 89 degrees with a heat index of 94 degrees Yikes. At the exact time of this post it is 85 with heat index of 91.
While I love being in/on the water whether in a sailboat, a dive boat, a launch or a dinghy, it is NOT supposed to be almost 90 degrees in the shade in November.

It must be brutal having to contend with warm weather all winter.Sea Hunt Video wrote:The Truth About Fall Sailing in Miami:
