This is a nightmare situation, I wish them the best of luck. The southern Phillipines have seen many disturbing events over the last several years and advisories for cruisers to avoid the area are common.

This is a very important posting for folks who've got wonderlust of pirate-like adventures even in nearby countries like the southern Carribean where political and social instability will certainly bring a brilliant revelation of the danger which lurks in such romantic "endroits." I was ridiculed by an individual on another blogsite who thought my question on "security concerns" was unfounded and typical of American fear-mongering as opposed to embracing cultures and discovering other indigenous peoples. LOL, ok, well I love indigenous folks like the next Discovery Channel sailor, but we should always do a thorough security analysis before tying to and having drinks in countries where residents daily cope with instability and in this case, insurgent and AQIP movements. I think the days of happily sailing the world are a thing of the past--cf the problems in the Gulf of Aden and Horn of Africa, etc., etc.

Sad but completely true. Even Rockefeller's become a menu item when they fail to appreciate their surroundings.
