Cape Dory 22 Drop Board SIze

Post by appletim1 »

I am replacing the companionway drop boards on a Cape Dory 22. I have measured the opening fairly carefully, but I wondered if the dimension from the factory is known and can be shared here. Thanks!

I realize that you've probably got them made by now, but I can get you the dimensions off mine if you still need them.

Went out to the boat yesterday and took some measurements and photos. My boards are teak and finished with Honey Teak System products. Hope this helps you.

Weird, the dimensions for my boat, also a Cape Dory 22 are slightly different.

Mine's a 1984 model, # 166, one of the last 9 that were built. Maybe they changed the companionway between years. Who knows?

Doesn't the bottom of the bottom board have an angle as well to match the thresh hold board angle on the companion way. It should be angled away from the cabin just like the others boards so that water will not come in. Maybe the angle is less I don't remember but I will check tomorrow and let you know. I know the CD30 bottom board is angled at the bottom because I just made a one piece board for winter storage out of a piece of plywood that was laying around. This allows me to take the three teak varnished boards into the basement for touch-up in the winter.

I haven't made new boards but what I do is store my boards inside the boat during winter and when boat is not in use. In its place I use a section of plywood that I painted with E2000 and Brightsides. When I am sailing or at the dock where the boat needs to look its best I break out the varnished boards for display and the plywood section goes under a one of the berths for emergency repairs.

Bottom line is that I made a template of the hatchway with cardboard and then traced the measurements onto the section of plywood....would that not be doable with the drop boards....at least to validate measurements?

Here is how it turned out. Not perfect, but a real upgrade for sure.
