Its getting time for my wife and I to pack up and move again. We have shipped our sailboat before but would be interested in any information or suggestions from other owners.
We are shipping from Newport Rhode Island to Corpus Christi Texas. Thanks.

SHIPPING A CAPE DORY 25D

Re: SHIPPING A CAPE DORY 25D
Peter,
I had my CD30 shipped from Hyde Park, NY out here to the Bay Area two years ago. I went through the shipping ads in Soundings and called the different companies. I ended up with A&B Marine Shipping in Annapolis, MD as the cheapest shipper that sounded like they had the equipment and experience to do it right....a difficult judgement call if you happen to like the boat! The guy who runs the company had a real communication problem, I thought, but the operation was otherwise competent and despite some frustrations I clearly would consider them again, based on the delivered condition of the boat.
The game is to negotiate and be flexible. I was given a high price initially, but when you indicate you have some time flexibility and are willing to wait for the shipper to locate another boat to share the truck on the major part of the trip, the price can come down dramatically.
It also pays to locate good yards at either end to lift and load the boat and for whatever assistance you feel you need to prepare the boat for shipping and for recomissioning. I did all the shipping preparation myself, but did use a rigger at the yard out here, mostly to take advantage of the situation to have a professional inspection done of all the standing rigging.
PERI came out here in great shape, the driver was careful to watch for chafe on the boat and mast, etc., I was grateful for the care. PERI was the only sailboat on the bay that had squashed speed bugs on the pulpit for a while!
